SA: Everest respect worth more than being first Tenzing
The grandson of the Sherpa who many claim beat SIR EDMUND HILLARY to the top of Mount
Everest says it doesn't matter who reached the summit first, but it does matter whether
respect was paid to the mountain.
TASHI TENZING is in Adelaide to give a public lecture on his family's climbing history. He
represents the third generation of his family to climb the world's tallest peak.
Mr TENZING says his grandfather TENZING NORGAY paid respect to the mountain for allowing
him to climb, it while HILLARY reportedly said he had finally knocked the bastard off.
He says the respect paid was much more important than who climbed it first.
Mr TENZING says Sir HILLARY's recent claims that he reached the summit first appear to be
contradicted by a photo of his grandfather on the summit.
